For the last 25 years seeking to understand the ways in which people become unhappy or dissatisfied in their lives and how this can be addressed has been a major focus in my life. I now hold a Diploma in Counselling which has helped me to develop ways to use what I have learned to benefit clients. I work with individual adults on a short or long term basis and have seen a fairly broad spectrum of clients either through GPs or through Cruse Bereavement Care.
I am married and have two daughters whom I have home educated over the past 12 years and I enjoy the countryside in my spare time.
My view is that people's ability to resolve their issues and build fulfilling lives is compromised by a number of factors such as self doubt low self esteem and a feeling that it is weak or selfish to admit to difficulties. Counselling can help by providing a safe environment in which to take an honest look at life without being judged and criticised which facilitates the emergence of healthier attitudes and perspectives.
Counselling is not like visiting the doctor where the expert diagnoses the problem and prescribes a solution. I do not provide answers or give advice but I do draw on many years of reflecting on ideas from thinkers like Freud and his followers as well as Carl Rogers and more recently from the positive psychology perspectives such as solution focused therapy in helping clients to arrive at their own answers.
The kind of issues I can work with:
